MCPc Invests $1 Million in Mercyhurst University Cyber Program

July 25, 2017 – MCPc announced today a $1 million investment in Mercyhurst University (Erie, Penn.) that will create a high-tech computer laboratory that helps prepare undergraduate and graduate students for jobs in the cybersecurity field and, adjacent to the lab, a high-security network operation center that employs those same and other students who are supervised and paid by MCPc.

The cyber lab will include 20 work stations and be used as a teaching facility by Mercyhurst faculty associated with the Ridge College of Intelligence Studies. The operations center will accommodate at least 16 student-employees. MCPc staff will oversee students working in the center. The students will be engaged with actual MCPc customers.

Headquartered in Cleveland, MCPc has locations in eight cities throughout the United States, including Erie, where it employs 30 associates, and Pittsburgh.  In announcing the gift at a press conference at Mercyhurst today, Andy Jones, MCPc CEO, called the investment a philanthropic gift that is also part of his company’s plans to grow business in Western Pennsylvania.

“MCPc is poised for growth. However, to grow, we not only need new customers—we need specialized tech talent that can serve them. That talent, which is in short supply nationwide, is an important outcome of the cyber lab and secure network operation center we are creating at Mercyhurst. Our investment in students is good not for our business – it means helping create jobs in Western Pennsylvania and growing the regional economy.”

Mercyhurst President Michael Victor extolled the commitment, saying it was closely aligned with the university’s goal of preparing students for real-world job experiences. About a third of the commitment from MCPc includes stipends that will pay students at industry rates for their services in the center. Mercyhurst also used today’s occasion to name a new dean of its Ridge College as well as several other key appointments.

Construction on the new facilities is planned for fall 2017. The network operations center and the cyber lab are projected to be ready by spring 2018.
