GFT Markets Gains More Reliable, Manageable Data Backup Solution

Business Challenge

GFT Markets, a provider of currency exchange services, was experiencing rapid growth, evolving quickly from a regional business into a global one. As a result, the IT team had to address a number of challenges in scaling up its infrastructure to support the organization. Data backups in particular were becoming a problem. The company had large data sets, and its existing backup solution was routinely failing to meet their needs. It lacked central management capabilities and was not robust enough to handle the workload. Significant portions of its mission-critical infrastructure were not being covered, and backups were failing at a rate of 60 percent -- creating administrative headaches and exposing GFT Markets to an unacceptable level of risk.

After evaluating its options, GFT Markets chose CommVault’s Simpana® as its new platform for managing data backups and partnered with MCPc for deployment.

“We needed a holistic backup and recovery solution to meet our RTO/RPO needs. The CommVault solution showed that it would be reliable and require little administration,” said Jason Nicholas, Team Lead Infrastructure, GFT Markets. “And we looked to MCPc for implementation because we had a successful relationship through many staff augmentations. Given their experience with CommVault and their understanding of our environment, it was a natural fit.”

MCPc planned the installation with the GFT Markets IT team to ensure that Simpana would be integrated seamlessly into existing infrastructure with minimal disruptions to the business.

“MCPc was able to work through implementation issues with expediency, and very little oversight was needed. Appropriate architectural considerations were discussed before implementation, which reduced reworks and the total cost for the project,” said Nicholas.

Since deploying Simpana, GFT Markets has experienced dramatic improvements in its backup operations. The company went immediately from a 40-percent backup success rate to 100 percent. Now the IT staff is no longer wasting its time “babysitting” backups.

“Backups are happening reliably with little to no administration on our part,” said Nicholas. “Simpana is easy to use and reliable, all at a lower price point than other solutions we looked at.”

Nicholas has noticed several features that are making backups easier and more efficient. Simpana allows for centralized management of distributed backups, which means GFT Markets can store backups locally for each location while still managing all backups on one central server. He also likes having universal support for all clients in one solution since Simpana works across UNIX, Linux and Windows. And the on-client data deduplication minimizes the amount of network bandwidth used for backups.
